The committee voted for a new private vendor with an open-ended contract that could  be renewed indefinitely. “I think this plan is a good step forward,” Rep. John J. Donahue, R-Somerville and chairman of the House Committee on Corrections, told the House Judicial Committee. He said the department has not received a  request for proposal. The proposal has been criticized by Rep. Brian P. The agency  wants the private contractor to provide medications that meet the medical needs of a significant portion of eligible inmates. “We would like to provide prisoners with a more consistent and more rapid source of medications. The department is particularly concerned about the effect that low level drug abuse may have on the safety of prisoners and the public,” the prison agency said in June 2016. In 2016, 1,100 prisoners were hospitalized for drug-related incidents and 1,800 inmates took drugs that endangered their health.   Read more Oct 20, 2024 — The Legislature's Judiciary Committee passed a bill to create a state contract to provide medical services to a prison annex in Miami-Dade County during a Thursday committee hearing.
